I’m a recovering clean floor addict…..
It used to be so bad I would mop and sweep all floors at least once a day. But God had other plans for me. Like four kids. They don’t like clean floors and they will do everything in their little power to make them look messy. I can sweep and walk away for a sec. Just a second of my time to toss laundry to and fro and guess what. That girl has crayon paper shredded all up in my crib. So I sweep. Repeat only this time with a crate full of Polly Pocket and Barbie shoes like confetti coloring my floor. Ah, ain’t parenthood grand. So, alas, my floor fetish is on strike until the battle of seize and destroy is over. Or until I die, which ever comes first.
I have never owned a carpet cleaner. I know I know..how can a floor obsessed person survive with out a steam cleaner? Well, I borrowed. And that it’s much fun. So the thought of getting my hands on a cleaning machine is quite exciting. One might ask a mother “what would you do if you had one free hour to yourself in a day”. Clean floors. No really, clean floors. On Saturday my three younger kids went to an all day vacation bible school from 9am-3pm. My oldest dogged out at the end so I wasn’t completely kid-free..but he’s no work at all. Just sits there. Stares. Needs fed sometimes. Let him out to go potty. Opp, na he’s not a puppy..started sounding like one though. Anyhow we (as in ME) used the Hoover Extract 60 to do some much needed cleaning. The night before we (again, me) cleaned a section in the living room as well as the stairs. Next day (kid free day, minus the pup) we cleaned our bedroom carpet.

The Hoover Extract is very easy to assemble and take you from dirty to clean in minutes. I read through (or scanned, don’t judge me) the instructions to make sure it was similar to other machines I have mastered. One important feature is the 2x concentrate washing solution by Hoover. You can use the 2x concentrate and fill to the specified line on the machine and then add water to the next line as demonstrated below. Or you can buy the standard solution and fill to the top line. I cleaned the living room floor and 1/2 the stairs. The mister finished the top of the stairs and cleaned our bedroom floor. He loved how easy it was to wash and maneuver. The Hoover Extract 60 didn’t feel any lighter than other cleaning machines I’ve used in the past but it offered great results. It was in the water! Oh, that dirty dirty water made us want to clean more carpets. Dumping the water was easy with the quick spout or lift the lever on top to dump faster. I rinsed it after dumping and it was a little difficult for the sand to get out of some of the nooks in the compartment. I saw in the instructions there was a place to adjust the bottom brushes but I couldn’t find it on my model. Also when we bent it over to see if it were under neath the water from the water compartment started leaking out. So here’s a tip: don’t look under your cleaner while water and solution are filled. We also used the attachments to clean the stairs. It did a good job of cleaning and the first stairs we cleaned were dry by the time we finished the top. Our bedroom carpet dried fast as well. I would say and hour’s time and the carpet was dry. Also when thinking about using this cleaner you have the option of a) washing or b) rinsing. I’m sure you can wash, dry, rinse, dry but we only did the washing option. The directions told us to hold the hand lever, that is located under the handle you push and pull with, going up and coming back. Then you release and go up and back once for for a total of four strocks- 2 washing and 2 drying.
Make sure you fill up the other side with warm water. I didn’t do this and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working. Roots are blonde people. Ok, and make sure you secure the water container in until you hear the “click” sound. This signals it is in properly. The bottom dirty water container also has to be in correctly for the machine to work. How do you know this, Beth? Hi, I’m your demo for dumbness today. I didn’t have it pushed in all the way and after I cleaned two rows I wondered why there was no water in the dirty water contraption. So after taking it out and looking at it like “what’s wrong with you mr. machine” then putting it correctly it worked fine. I can’t notice a whole difference in my living room carpet as it is a longer shag and it doesn’t appear very dirty. That’s the beauty of carpets these days. It’s also good to note that what your mama said back in the day: what you can’t see may hurt you, rings true. It’s one of those riddles you heard as a kid that’s actually true (your eyes staying crossed wasn’t or else I would be looking silly right now). My stairs are a breading ground of ‘ugly’ and I noticed the most improvement on them. Our bedroom was a room we have never hit with a carpet cleaner. It looks like brand new again. A carpet that is plush and very old, think early 90’s but without the aqua net, and this made it look nice. As nice as deep burgundy can look.
