We used to have one laptop in our home. One laptop meant “hands off” this is mommy’s machine. Why? Because mommy is so busy investigating the world online and writing reviews there is little time for anyone else. There are times at night in bed I’ll hear my husband (just when I think he’s asleep) say “click click click” to imitate my keys/his annoyance for not sleeping. Last tax season I used some of my return to purchase a new laptop. I love it..it has a enter key and everything! I passed down the older laptop (without the enter key) to my son whom is 10. Until now they only played video games on handhelds and gaming systems. Now they are able to game on the internet. With my permission of course.
Working at the school you see such a diverse group of children. Some have been subjected to computers and can type faster than me and others can’t find all the keys. We live in a time where I say “sink or swim” when it comes to technology. Getting used to the computer and familiar with typing will help your child in school and with their learning. Possible attention span as well? That sounds nice. Gaming supports hand and eye coordination and confidence within school aged children.
“Parents, don’t put away those video games just yet — today’s gamer may be tomorrow’s top surgeon” – USA TODAY (source: http://www.usatoday.com/news/topstories/2008-08-18-970688034_x.htm)
Now that my children have their own laptop and have the option to play games online it’s my job to find the age appropriate and safe websites for them to play on. If that doesn’t seem overwhelming then just go surf the web right now and start looking. I search for learning programs and something my children will engage with and be excited to play.
