Sunni sent me one of her newest items to review and use with my last newborn session. I couldn’t have been more excited because this newborn was my new niece! The bed and nightstand she sent me was the Anitque Sunset  Yellow Classic Complete bed set. I was extremely impressed with the packing on this large piece. It arrived in a very big box and was securely wraped inside and protected from stratches or damage between the bed and nightstand really well. The bed is a very nice, heavy wood and looks amazing in person. The paint job is gorgeous as well, with a bright yellow that’s been “weathered” nicely to give it that antique look. The tiny nightstand is so precious, what a perfect piece to help complete any newborn photo. The set does not come with a mattress, but if you would like one they are sold as well on CreaTive DesiGn Props site. If not, you can do like I did and simply add a blanket folded onto the bed to appear as the mattress. I absolutely love this yellow, its bright and is such a versatile color for either a boy or girl. I think if you are looking for a bed to try out or start with, this yellow is a perfect first choice.

Your days of ‘cabin fever’ are gone and all that’s left is to plan bbq’s with the friends, sign your kids up for swim lessons, and spends hours at t-ball games all summer.  Now, some of that sounds fun but as painful as bleacher bum seems it’s got nothin’ on a sunburn.  And if the unsightly red and white lines on your back aren’t enough to run to the sunscreen stash here are a few reasons to lube up:

Sunscreen dramatically decreases the effects of cancer-causing UV rays on the skin. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, accounting for nearly half of all cancer cases. Both UVA and UVB rays contribute to skin cancer, so be sure to use a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection. Learn more about skin cancer prevention from the American Cancer Society.

Speaking of Health…

What ingredients in sunscreens are harmful?

• Oxybenzone — linked to allergies, hormone disruption, cell damage, and low birth rate.
• Parabens — mimic estrogen; have been found in breast cancer tumors.
• PABA — a common allergen, might increase UV damage.
• Petroleum — toxic to the human body, unsustainable for the environment.
• Vitamin A — studies claim an increased risk of skin cancer when applied to skin exposed to sunlight.
• Artificial Fragrances — no way to know what the exact chemicals are behind these vague labels.
• Benzophenone-3 — linked to bleaching in coral reefs and interferes with the reproductive system of fish.

You can also look for sunscreens that are labeled cruelty-free and reef-safe. Those concerned about the presence of gluten in their sunscreens can look for sunscreens labeled gluten-free, like all of the Beyond Coastal line.

A Reason to go Beyond Coastal:

Review:  We decided to stain our fence last weekend.  It’s a shadow box fence.  I must have been really feeling brave as I asked all four of my kids to help my husband and I.  Some flying stain and screams later we were down to 1 child helping after about ..oh 15 minutes.  It was a hot day and after 30 min or so of staining I realized we need sunscreen.   I use a sunscreen on my face everyday but my kids needed some protection.  I grabbed our bag of Beyond Coastal sunscreen and blasted the kids and myself (or most of myself) and carried on with the project.  Five grueling hours later we were only 1/2 done (and a week later we are still 1/2 done -deep sigh) and I noticed I didn’t hit my back with the sunscreen.  The kids were covered and didn’t get sun burnt but because I neglected my back I got burnt.  So …the sunscreen worked..the parts I hit with the sunscreen were protected.  Now, as nice as it seems I did not plan the sunscreen/ no sunscreen test but Beyond Coastal did pass. As far as my children using Beyond Coastal they were fine with being lubed up.  They never complain about applications so it was not big issue.  Another good point about the Natural Sunscreen line was I didn’t smell like some sunscreens have a strong odor and leave you feeling greasy and smell like a tropical mess.

TiP: Put sunscreen on your kids in the morning and reapply throughout the day when playing outdoors.  In case you forget your sunscreen when your at the park at least they have a barrier on from the morning application.  I think that’s very Super Mommy of you!

I found Loup Online while flipping through one of my favorite magazines, LUCKY. I saw the cutest outfit and started to read the sidelines to see where each of the pieces were from. When I read Loup, I immediate grabbed my laptop to see what type of other fine items I could find. I was pretty excited to see their Spring 2012 collection included some bold blue plaid pieces.

My favorite is this skirt:

I was sent the heather grey bustier maxi dress (above) to review. Now, I’m usually pretty good at choosing items that work well with me and my shape. This time, I totally messed up. The dress arrived in a really cute signature Loup bag (reusable- perfect!) and looked pretty nice before I tried it on. The fabric was heavy (heavier then I expected for a maxi dress, but not too heavy) and a very comfortable material.  The issue for me was the way it actually fit. I have such a square middle (no waist at all and no hips), that once I put the dress on, it fit me but looked pretty ”ehh” on me. I tried adding a belt to it to break up my square-ness, but it just made me look worse. I finally added a blazer (thank you, blazers for being so hot right now!) and that definitely helped me out. I’d suggest going a size up, if you are shaped like I am and would like to attempt this maxi. I think if I could’ve had enough draping around my non-existent waist, it would’ve looked better. The waist on this has some stitching but not all the way across so I felt like it laid different then I expected across my middle. If you are hour-glass shaped or have a tiny waist, I would guess this would be gorgeous on you!

I’m loving the bright trend for accessories. I especially love wearing a pop of color on my wrist. I’ve got tons of fun bangles and bracelets, but I was in search of a great watch that could make a statement, too. That’s when I found Modify Watches. These fabulous inter-changeable watches can be purchased in sets (one or more faces and a set of bands to switch up the look) or you can build your own watch. I love the endless choices! I also really like the idea of a rubber wrist band. I’ve been seeing a lot of watches lately that have the look of rubber but are actually ceramic or another material. I spent a good 1/2 hour trying to decide which bands/face combos I really wanted because there were so many fabulous choices! I finally settled on a white face with a pink and a green strap (in the Classic style). I love how easy these bands are to change out from one color to the other. They definitely hold the watch face securely in place and since they are rubber, it forms right around it and is flexible. I chose the larger of the two size watches because I really like the look of a larger watch on my wrist. If you’d prefer the more slender watch, check out their Mini collection.
